[DENTAL] Things I've Learned from Wisdom Teeth Extraction Surgery + Post-Wisdom Teeth Removal Recovery

💜
  • If possible, it's recommended to have someone to accompany/fetch u to the clinic because the sedation will make you drowsy & unable to care for yourself after the surgery. Your companion can take care of you & note down the instructions to be followed in your post-surgery recovery.
  • Eat before your surgery to avoid low blood pressure/fainting (also, too high of blood pressure level is also dangerous when you go through anesthesia).
  • After the extraction or surgery, give your body some rest & take a nap as long as you can until the numbness fades (numbness usually lasts for 4 hours, especially the tongue). Sleeping stops you from accidentally hurting your own tongue without knowing because it's still numb & can't feel anything. When you sleep/for a few hours after the surgery, make sure to bite on the cotton gauze at your best to stop the bleeding & change it as frequent as you can (I've changed 4 times until it stops bleeding). You can always ask for more cotton gauze replacement just in case you bleed a lot
*NOTE: call your dentist immediately if your heavy bleeding doesn't stop after 4 hours*

*cotton gauzes I've changed: 3 times (+ another 1 immediately after surgery when otw home)

  • Get yourself some dessert for your post-surgery recovery. Cold food, especially yoghurt, ice cream, cake & milk tea makes you and your gums happy (soothes it like how ice pack works, just that this is directly to the wound). Make sure your ice cream and cake is easy to chew with your palate (roof of your mouth) because you won't be able to use your teeth/open or close your mouth any bigger than a grape size due to your swollen cheeks & gums.

*1st pic: GrabFood delivery - Lllao Lllao froyo (Frozen yoghurt) with dark chocolate sauce
*2nd pic: I made tiramisu cake a day before my extraction surgery, it's worth it <3 (ate for almost the whole week 😍🤎🤍)

  • You can only eat watery food for almost a week, especially when it gets more swollen day by day from 2nd day until 5th-7th day. Or to be exact, you can only DRINK your food, because your mouth won't be able to open any bigger than a tablespoon... Make sure your food, like congee is warm, NOT HOT, as it may burn your wound. I usually left it till almost cold, just in case. Also, you can actually eat fish, but you'll have to squash it into congee form, like baby's food (DO TAKE NOTE WHETHER THERE'S BONE BEFORE YOU CONSUME).

Salmon fish is one of the best choice for the fish types.
Or you can put any fish(without bone) of your choice into the congee to have better nutrition in your diet.

  • Try not to sneeze or do any sucking motion (like using a straw) for the first 48 hours, it might tear open the wound or disrupt blood clot.
  • Sleep on an elevated pillow to prevent squishing your cheeks to the pillow in your sleep & causing any pain. I placed another pillow below the contour pillow that I usually sleep on for 4 days (until my cheeks are not that swollen anymore).
  • Try to brush your teeth on the night of your surgery if you can (don't be like me), try not to stay too close to the wound as it'll disrupt the blood clot or remove it from your wound, causing pain & dry socket (or further inflammation). However, DO NOT GARGLE vigorously, just rinse off your toothpaste with water gently. I didn’t brush my teeth on 1st day after surgery because it’s too swollen, but I did in the next morning onwards. Start using the mouthwash/warm salt water only on the 2nd day, but again, just rinse until your stitches are removed (in my opinion).
*There's a doubt that's always in mind that I forgotten to ask Dr.: I'm not sure why, bleeding occurs every morning when I brush my teeth (left side bottom teeth, the one that's nearest to the nerves) even I brush very gently, until after I removed the stitches (8th day). But once I rinsed it off with water, there's no bleeding at all throughout the days.

  • Food will sometimes stuck to the stitches & hard to get it off if you ate sticky food, especially porridge/congee. Try not to play with the stitches with your tongue & thinking it’s food residue, you’ll accidentally pull your stitches & cause pain to your wound (I did at least once a day. LOL DUN EVEN TRY IT). Instead, patiently rinse your mouth with water very gently a few times to flush the particles out every time after your meal & make sure it's completely clean before going to bed.

❗ Gentle reminder: Skip these images & proceed to next point if you'll find these disgusting ❗

*Left bottom & upper stitches tends to catch more food than the right sides'

  • For ice pack, it's better to use it the earlier the better once you see the swelling happen, as it'll speed up the healing. I did it only on 4th day, which is a bit late, because I thought it’ll go away itself, but now, considering how swollen it is already on the 2nd day before the peak swelling day (3rd day), it's better to treat it earlier.
  • If you want to keep your teeth (don't ask me the reason, it's simply just to be remembered that you once had 4 freaking wisdom teeth)it's better to soak in water straight away on the day it got extracted. I soaked for 2 days overnight & changed the solution twice (I use contact lens multi-purpose solution). Then, keep it in an airtight container & soak with some solution.

*One bestie of mine straight away put in container without soaking beforehand & after 3 years she opened it, it smells like shit. So, care & keep at your own risk 😂

AFTER STITCHES REMOVAL.
  • The wound opening is still quite huge & tends to have food stuck in it and between the Molar teeth no matter how many times I gargle it (I start to gargle only after my stitches are removed & before that I only do rinsing). Sometimes even if I brush my teeth & gargle before bed till there's no more food particles coming out, I still woke up with more food residues in the morning too when I gargle again... (literally became a hamster that has food stuffed in their cheeks 🐹 lol). This happened until the end of 1st week of stitches removal.

*1st pic: 2nd day of removal (still have slightly red on the healing gums)
*2nd pic: 6th day of removal (no more reddish gums, only holes to be healed in months)

  • 1st week after stitches removal, the Molar teeth (the largest teeth at the back) is still quite weak, both upper and lower part too. When I eat very chewy food, my jaw gets very tired & the molar teeth hurts a little, like they're shaky & almost gonna fall off. I still couldn't bite hard food, like chicken's cartilage/soft bone & crab's shell.
  • 2nd week after stitches removal, only the top Molar teeth are feeling weak. I can chew better now, but have to gargle every time after I eat as the food will still stuck to the extraction part. Also, I can eat anything I want, including crab (not those super hard shell too, only the small ones), but it still takes some time to chew the food off completely (especially those meat with more connective tissues).

CONCLUSION.
Not just for surgery, there's always a risk in doing anything. Please be mindful when you choose a dental clinic for your teeth extraction & make sure it's licensed and run by professionals. Alternately, like my case, get yourself referred by your dentist from the dental clinic that you always go to. Doing research, getting information from a few sources to compare them & ask for advices from people around you who have experienced it before also helps you to prepare for it (although sometimes it might scare you more but it's worth it). Dental is also considered as a medical or health care that you should be aware of. Do not be penny-wise and pound-foolish and go for cheap place to undergo the procedure, as it may cause you permanent side effects or worst, death. Again, DO YOUR RESEARCH.

I appreciate a lot for your patience & interest if you've read till this far.

If you're reading this before going for the extraction, I wish you all the best & just go with the flow. Listen to what your dentist/dental surgeon told you & call them when you feel like something is not right after the surgery;
Or you're just curious about my experience..? Thank you for reading too.
Stay home, stay safe, stay healthy & take care. xx <3

❗Gentle reminder: There may be some graphic content which might be uncomfortable for some of you. Kindly read at your own risk. Thank you 😜😅❗

HERE WE GO.

I never knew I had wisdom teeth until I went for X-Ray & teeth molding prior my braces journey.

Left side = right side of my teeth; vice-versa

Both the bottom wisdom teeth are grown horizontally under the gums & pushing my molars (big teeth at the back of mouth). If they're not extracted, it might affect my future molar teeth's health (a.k.a. cavities & have to extract them off if badly affected!) as the food debris are gonna stuck at the gaps between the wisdom tooth & the molar.

My dentist, Dr. Chee (a very gentle, nice & experienced dentist, who's always fully booked and you have to book her appointment at least a month earlier) from White Perfect Dental Clinic (Yu Lek branch) referred me to a specialist for surgery due to the condition of the wisdom teeth. The specialist clinic - Wong Dental Specialist Clinic (Dr. Wong Foot Meow) is located at the KL CBD.

After my scaling & fillings appointment with Dr. Chee , I called the dental clinic & asked for the price. The reception asked how many teeth I wanted to extract & told me the price for it. My appointment was straight away made at 2pm on the next day of my call ❗You are required to have someone to accompany/fetch u to the clinic because the sedation will make you drowsy & unable to care for yourself after the surgery ❗ The price was RM3500 for 4 teeth (2 upper & 2 lower) including all the medicines, sedation, post-surgery X-ray and post-surgery consultation fees.

I've did all the research the whole night to prepare for my big day (my 1st & biggest surgery in my life). All I can find on Google & dental forums searches was the terrifying side effects (temporary/permanent numbness, loss of taste/touch caused by nerve damage, bone destruction, dry socket, jaw pain, DEATH caused by heavy bleeding) and the pain + swollenness you have to suffer a week after the surgery. There's only 2 blog posts about this dental specialist clinic & they were already 10 years ago (common comment: bad service from the reception & impatient Dr.).

THE DAY

The traffic flow was super smooth (maybe cos of the pandemic, employees are only allowed to work from home & no dine-ins are allowed), which is very unusual because KL CBD is always congested with vehicles & pedestrians. I arrived 5 minutes earlier, but the clinic was not even open yet & no one was answering the call, nor the doorbell, because they're having a lunch break from 12pm-2pm. I called them at 2.05pm & they apologized as they were having lunch at the back & couldn't heard anything.

The reception (an elderly woman, looks like Dr. Wong's wife) gave me a leaflet for post-surgery advices & explained some of them to me. Dr. Wong looks like he's in his 50s, English speaking & patiently answering my questions and concerns about the surgery. After consulting the doctor & understanding how the procedure works (usually lasts less than 45 minutes), Dr. Wong gave me IV sedation through my right hand's back's vein, which I couldn't feel any pain at all from the thin needle poking (not a GA, general anesthesia that'll make me fully asleep, but the partial one which I can still feel everything happening in my mouth & able to give responses). There's 3 nurses (1 Malay kakak, 2 Chinese & 1 of them looks like Doctor's daughter) helping the dentist out. I don't really remember the exact details of the whole surgery procedure, but all I can feel was the tools plucking out my upper teeth easily, then Dr. Wong telling me he'll separate my bottom teeth (cos they're too huge to even get it whole out from my gums), then the next second, I can feel the sickle probe (hook tool) opening my mouth wider & elevator/luxators (machine sound) cutting and breaking my teeth into smaller parts. I couldn't relax & try to sleep during the whole procedure, but when I wanted to do so, the surgery is completed (I can't even feel them doing any stitches to my gums or I actually felt it but I've totally forgotten about it after that). For a few times while resting, I was touching my chins & lips cos they're itchy. It feels like a silicone balloon & I thought they laid something on my mouth, but turns out it's the numbness after surgery made myself can't even feel my own tongue, lips, jaw & chin LOL. The whole procedure lasts 15-20 minutes.

After the surgery when I got down from the surgical bed, I couldn't stand properly cause of the drowsiness & my sights are very blurred, almost like you're drunk and almost gonna K.O.. The Malay nurse kakak held my arms & brought me to the waiting area. Guess what? I was high af & keep talking about random shits (my bf told me how high I was after my anesthesia was all gone). My cheeks are kind of swollen & wounds were still bleeding so they gave me cotton gauze to bite on to stop the bleed. My bottom left cheek has a slight pain. I was prescribed with antibiotics & anti-swelling pills that have to be completed full course, sleeping pill just in case I wasn't able to sleep, Ponstan (Mefenamic acid) to treat pain, some mouth wash to rinse gently start from 2nd day ❗not GARGLE❗ & extra cotton gauze for replacements throughout the day. I didn't sleep at all for the whole car ride when returning home & was constantly taking pictures of my teeth LOL.

*1st & 2nd pic: post-surgery heavy bleed on cotton gauze, lips were dry & red
*3rd pic: changed to new gauze immediately in car
*4th pic: still can see jaw line & no swollen cheeks

POST-SURGERY

I took 2 hours nap Required to sleep on an elevated pillow for the wound, so I placed another pillow below the one that I usually slept on & couldn't sleep back anymore after that, but my whole body was still very tired & there's no signs of serious swelling on my cheeks. I've changed the cotton gauze twice before I took my nap & twice again after I woke up from my nap before my dinner.

*1st pic: cotton gauze changed after woke up from nap
*2nd pic: tried to sleep back but couldn't, change a new one again
*3rd pic: last cotton gauze I use (left: right teeth bleeding condition, right: left teeth bleeding condition)

I can't eat anything other than warm watery food ❗NOT HOT❗, like porridge and some cold desserts, like ice cream (recommended by doctor to soothe the pain and swell). My right gums are not constantly bleeding anymore (can be seen from the brown color blood clot on the gauze), but my bottom left one is still bleeding (dark to bright red blood on gauze). I WhatsApp the clinic at 6pm (30 minutes after they closed, but I've totally forgotten it's over their operating hours) & asked about my concern but they never replied, but after my dinner time, Dr. Wong himself called back to me around 10pm and told me it's all normal to bleed but should stop bleeding after changing a few times of the gauze. My gums never bleed anymore after I ate my porridge & I can taste the food already (tongue not numb anymore). I couldn't bite anything at all cause my gums are swollen (didn't happen to my cheeks yet).

*1st pic: injection mark
*2nd pic: my meal for the rest of the week - porridge

10pm, 6 hours post-surgery: Right part upper lips not numb anymore, slowly in 30minutes, whole right lips, cheeks, jaw & chin back to normal. I can feel the slight pain only if touched the cheeks near the wounds.

2am, 10 hours post-surgery: Left part upper lips not numb anymore, but side cheeks & lower chin are still numb.

-

POST-SURGERY X-RAY & CHECKUP (next day)

Both of my cheeks are super swollen (as told by Dr. previously) even though I've taken the anti-swelling pill, but there's no pain at all, only discomfort caused by the swollen gums staying in the middle of both my upper & lower teeth. It was very hard & inconvenient for me to bite on the Bitewing while I'm doing the panoramic X-ray (even the kakak nurse also said that my cheeks are super swollen 😂🐹).

*2nd pic: (left) sedation injection, (right) anti-swelling injection

Dr. Wong spontaneously gave me an anti-swelling injection after seeing my cheeks condition & the needle's so much thicker & painful than sedation's 😨. And I told him about my numbness on my left lips & chin is still going on. He tested with a sickle probe (a sharp tool) & turns out there's a 50 cent size (old RM0.50 coin) of numbness at that area. So, he prescribed me with Neurobion, Vitamin B (B1,B6,B12) to be consumed for 20 days, twice a day to heal the temporary damaged nerve (caused by the bottom left wisdom teeth being very near to the nerve), usually will take 6 weeks to heal completely 😱😨.

-

RECOVERY WEEK (2nd-6th day)
I made tiramisu cake a day before the extraction which is a great timing to eat my cake for this whole recovery week. Cold food, especially ice cream, cake & milk tea makes me and my gums happy. My 3 times of meal a day is only porridge & 1 dessert time with TIRAMISU CAKE 🤎🤍/ milk tea.

2ND DAY.

*1st pic: just woke up swollen af face
*2nd pic: after dinner's face
*3rd pic: sweet potato porridge (lunch & dinner)
*4th pic: my tiramisu cake..1st piece of cake from container is always so freakin' ugly

(from packaging)

Coptis Chinensis Root Extract, butylene glycol, simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) seed oil, polyglyceryl-3 methylglucose distearate, cetyl ethylhexanoate, butylene glycol dicaprylate/dicaprate, isohexadecane, 1,2-hexanediol, cetearyl alcohol, glyceryl stearate, butyrospermum parkii (shea) butter, sodium acrylate/sodium acryloyldimethyl taurate copolymer, polysorbate 80, glyceryl caprylate

(from ^Amazon website)

⭐Main Ingredient:

  • Coptis Chinensis (Barberry) Root Extract - Hydrating & Calming
  • Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil - Balancing water & oil to improve skin elasticity
  • Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter - Moisturising & Calming

First Impression & Experience:

Packaging made with recyclable paper, jar is thick glass material, so it's quite heavy. It has creamy texture with slight oily feeling when applied. It's a bit sticky when applied, but after a minute, it dries down to dewy finish. The cream has no fragrance at all, but has a slight buttery smell.

Pros:

  • Large volume with affordable price
  • Minimal ingredient list
  • Non-sticky

Cons:

  • Breaks me out around my oily skin area (T-zone)
  • Doesn't provide enough moisture to my dry skin (U-zone)
  • Hard to carry around cos of the glass material, need to transfer to a small container for better convenience

Final Thoughts & Conclusion:

The cream doesn't suit my skin at all, no matter the oily T-zone or dry U-zone (I have dry-combination skin).

The next day after I used this product, the area on my face where I don't usually break out has pimples & a lot of tiny bumps starts to grow underneath the skin on my forehead. The skin around my mouth peels and itch caused by the dryness.

I've tried with more layers of toners to give my skin enough hydration before sealing with this moisturizer, but it still doesn't change the result of my skin irritation.

After giving it a week of try & new break out still happening, I've moved on this cream to use on my body, even if it doesn't provide enough moisture to my dry elbows & hands.

It's such a disappointment as I've heard a lot of good reviews about Pyunkang Yul online, especially for sensitive skin, but it has further worsen my skin condition when I was going through a damaged skin barrier period.

Perhaps, I should tried the ^Nutrition Cream instead because it's more suitable for my skin type, compared to this which is for oily-combination cream (I bought it because this was the only Pyunkang Yul cream on stock that time).

Price vs. Value: ★★★★☆

RM75 bought on June 2020 from Shopee Malaysia ready stock shop with products directly import from Korea

Size: 100ml

Repurchase? ★☆☆☆☆

No, considering the break outs it has caused & lack of moisturisation even if used as body lotion;

If you have oily-combination/oily skin, it's worth the bang for a buck because of the huge volume (so far the moisturizers around this price range in the market is only in 50ml or 80ml). But no guarantee whatsoever because your skin might react differently to the ingredients in the product.

Ingredients:

Aqua(Water), Snail Secretion Filtrate, Butylene Glycol, Glycerin, Niacinamide, 1,2-Hexanediol, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, sh-Oligopeptide-1, Bee Venom, Plantago Asiatica Extract, Laminaria Digitata Extract, Diospyros Kaki Leaf Extract, Salix Alba (Willow) Bark Extract, Ulmus Campestris (Elm) Bark Extract, Althaea Rosea Root Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Beta-Glucan, Betaine, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Adenosine, Panthenol, Allantoin, Pentylene Glycol, Zanthoxylum Piperitum Fruit Extract, Pulsatilla Koreana Extract, Usnea Barbata (Lichen) Extract, Polysorbate 20, Lecithin, Arginine

(from Benton Official Website)

⭐Main Ingredient: Snail Secretion, Niacinamide, Aloe Leaf Juice, Bee Venom, Aloe Leaf Extract

First Impression & Experience: ★

It's my first snail secretion product, moreover with bee venom ingredient as a combination. From the consistency, I'd rather consider it as a serum than an essence. It's very pudding-like, almost feels like the Nature Republic's Aloe Vera Jelly, but with no fragrance at all. It immediately soothes my skin when my skin was going through a super sensitive period (due to over exfoliation & damaged skin barrier), where even normal cream/artemisia essence would make it stings like crazy.

Pros:

  • Soothes irritation skin immediately - Bee Venom ingredient
  • Solves inflamed pimple problem - Bee Venom ingredient
  • Minimizes pore's appearance & fade PIH (Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation) - Niacinamide ingredient
  • Improve damaged skin barrier - Snail secretion ingredient

Cons:

  • Hard to get to the bottom of the product when it's almost used up

Final Thoughts & Conclusion:

Dry patches around the mouth that caused the itchiness & irritation was soothed immediately with this product. It flattens any inflamed pimple & healed post-acne spots. Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (dark spots caused by those pimples) appearance was also significantly faded.

It's a very good product to rely on when you suffer from damaged skin barrier. One whole pump is enough for my full face. The result is amazing. It's also a product to always have on hands for emergency or premenstrual cycle when the skin condition was very sensitive & hormonal breakouts. Using it as an everyday essence/serum can maintain your skin's health. Pair it with artemisia/mugwort products, especially in watery essence form, it'll be the best combination.

When I was having a very damaged skin barrier, I discovered this product from Kelly Driscoll's YouTube videos (skincare-enthusiast youtuber). Both this & ^Cosrx's Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence caught my eyes. I'll get my hands on the Cosrx's soon & talk about it.

Repurchase? ★

1. 100%!

2. Why? Refer to my previous points 💓

Price vs. Value: ★★★★

The price is affordable & worth it, considering the high quality & effectiveness of the product.
